One of the organizations that the National Bank of Ethiopia regulates is Sidama Bank Sc. By Proclamation No. 40/1996, the Institution was legally registered and granted a license as a SIDAMA Micro Finance Institution S.C.

The central bank’s regulators have officially transformed Sidama Microfinance Institution into Sidama Bank by granting it a banking license. The Bank enters the market with 575 million Br in paid-up capital under the leadership of its founder, Tadesse Hatiya. 1.45 billion Br of stock has been purchased by shareholders.

Initially known as the Sidama Rural Women’s Credit & Saving Scheme, the organization changed its name to a full-fledged microfinance institution (MFI) four years after it was founded in 1994. It is one of several MFIs converting to banks. While its counterpart in the Amhara Regional State is transitioning to Tsedey Bank, Oromia Credit & Saving S.C. is entering the market as Siinqee Bank. For Sidama to reach the minimal requirement set by the central bank, it will have six years to increase its paid-up capital to five billion Birr.
