Regarding Awash Bank
After the communist system was overthrown on November 10, 1994, Ethiopia’s first private bank, Awash Bank, was founded. The Bank began operating as a bank on February 13, 1995. It was founded by 486 founding shareholders with a paid-up capital of Birr 24.2 million. Since beginning operations, the Bank has had impressive expansion. Awash Bank has shown better operational and financial performance among Ethiopia’s private banks despite internal and international constraints. The present goals of Awash Bank are to improve its financial structure, technical prowess, human capital, and clientele.
Our name comes from the Awash River, which is widely utilized in Ethiopia for industrial operations, hydroelectricity production, and modest to large-scale irrigation programs. By extension, the slogan “nurturing like the river” alludes to Awash Bank’s significant contribution to the socioeconomic advancement of the nation. Additionally, we help the populace by promoting the practice of saving, offering credit options, and enabling effective and quick payment methods.
Accessibility is one of our bank’s guiding principles. We continuously work to increase our accessibility via a variety of service delivery avenues. We now have the largest footprint and most comprehensive branch networks of any private bank in the nation. We provide our clients the convenience of 24/7 service via ATMs, point-of-sale terminals, internet, mobile, and agency banking in addition to branch networks.
Since its inception, Awash Bank has placed a high priority on corporate social responsibility. By investing money back into the underprivileged strata’s education, health, and social and environmental wellness, the bank hopes to improve the socioeconomic position of the areas in which it works. The number of primary schools constructed in partnership with NGOs, the upgrades made to healthcare facilities, the planting of trees around the nation, and other outcomes all clearly demonstrate the good influence of our actions.
Realizing our organizational goals and the targets outlined in our plan is how we gauge our success. With a focus on “Transforming AIB: Vision 2025,” we have created a 10-year strategy plan in this respect. Both its financial and non-financial goals are challenging. Nevertheless, based on our performance so far, it seems that the Bank will meet these goals well in advance of 2025. In most important financial performance metrics during the last ten years, Awash Bank has had growth rates that are above normal for the banking sector. In fact, among the nation’s private banks, Awash Bank has had the quickest growth. We credit this outstanding accomplishment to our Board of Directors innovative leadership, as well as to the hardworking management team, motivated employees, and devoted clients.
